What is a Behavior Consultant and Why Do I need One?

What is a behavior consultant?

A behavior consultant is someone who has education and experience in behavior management and can offer support in recognizing the function of a problematic behavior and develop a plan and solutions to address the problematic behavior.

In my case I am a former Special Education teacher.  I have taken courses in behavior management including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Positive Behavior Supports.  I have experience conducting Functional Behavior Assessments with former students and developing behavior support plans.

A behavior consultant is NOT a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), nor qualified to provide ABA therapy and can not replace the important roles they fill.

However, in my experience as a teacher and care provider, I saw several families who needed vital services from a BCBA or ABA therapist who were unfortunately put on wait lists before they could receive services.  A behavior consultant can help fill this gap and start providing support while you wait.  Again, you should absolutely stay on the waiting list for these crucial services.

There are also times when a child may be exhibiting problematic or maladaptive behaviors but they are not severe enough to qualify for services from a BCBA but are still causing significant problems and stress in the home environment.  I can help even if the problem may seem “insignificant” in the grand scheme of things.  If it is disrupting your child, family, and stress levels it’s worth working on.

My approach includes determining the function of the behavior through parent surveys.  We’ll look at what happens before, during, and after the target behavior and then develop a customized plan and resources to address the behavior proactively as well as in the moment.

When should I seek out a behavior consultant?

If your child is starting to develop a pattern of maladaptive or problematic behaviors such as aggression, eloping (running away), tantrums, etc, get a consultation sooner than later to avoid it becoming a larger problem.

If you are struggling with specific settings such as church, performances, swim lessons, etc, a consultant can help figure out a plan to help your child be successful in these settings.

If you have said to yourself, “My kid is driving me crazy!”  You’re not alone, and no judgment!  But let a consultant help you be a little a less crazy.

If your child is struggling with severe behavioral concerns and has been referred to a specialist such as a BCBA or ABA therapist but you are struggling to get in quickly, a consultant can offer support in the meantime.
